Manchester United have Valencia captain Jose Gaya on their radar in the ongoing transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Deportes COPE Valencia on Twitter.

As things stand, the Red Devils are looking to bolster the left-hand side of the defence this summer. At the moment, both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are on the sidelines.

To that end, the Red Devils have their eyes on the Spain international to add reinforcements to the backline. However, the 28-year-old’s compatriots Marc Cucurella and Marcos Alonso are also options for the Old Trafford side.

For now, the Chelsea full-back is the leading candidate to make his way to United in the final hours of the transfer window. However, Valencia are fearful of a late approach for their captain.

Gaya has been a key player for the La Liga outfit for several years now. Having made his way through the youth ranks at Los Ches, the Spaniard has been ever-present in their starting lineup since the 2014/15 term.

The full-back has been crucial to Valencia’s team this season as well, starting in every match for them so far. Therefore, it would be a surprise to see the defender leave his boyhood club this summer.

At United, with Shaw and Malacia out of action, Diogo Dalot started as the left-back against Nottingham Forest on 26 August in the Premier League. The Red Devils had to dig deep to conjure a 3-2 win over the Tricky Trees at home.

The Portugal international has played on the left-hand side of the defence on a number of occasions for the Old Trafford side. Thus, the 24-year-old is more than capable of doing the job.

However, injuries are a part of the game and we cannot take a risk in that regard. As a result, it would arguably be wise for United to bolster the left-back area. But will Gaya be the one to do that? Only time will tell.
