Chelsea opted against signing Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana from Inter Milan
Inter Milan were unable to convince Chelsea to join the race for Andre Onana, who has joined Manchester United this summer, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Metro].
The Nerazzurri were looking to get the most out of the deal for the Cameroonian in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, the Blues were offered the chance to get a hold of the shot-stopper’s signature.
While the Serie A giants were open to parting ways with the 27-year-old, the Old Trafford side’s opening proposal was not up to the mark. Thus, in order to drive up the price, the Italian outfit looked to get the West London club involved.
As things stand, Mauricio Pochettino has Kepa Arrizabalaga as the only established goalkeeper at his disposal. The Stamford Bridge side parted ways with Edouard Mendy recently.
However, Chelsea were not interested in pursuing Onana. The Blues have other priorities to focus on for the time being and are bogged down by Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
In the end, United agreed to a £44 million fee with Inter to acquire the services of the Cameroonian. The shot-stopper has reunited with Erik ten Hag at the Old Trafford side.
At Ajax Amsterdam, the 27-year-old developed under the Dutch manager. The two spent several fruitful years at the Eredivisie outfit before the gaffer made his way to Manchester and the goalkeeper signed for the Nerrazurri as a free agent last summer.
Ten Hag counted on David de Gea in between the sticks in the previous campaign. However, despite some impressive displays, the Spaniard left a lot to be desired with regard to his distribution skills. The 32-year-old ended up leaving the club at the end of last month after his contract expired.

Therefore, we evidently need a new number one this summer. Chelsea’s reluctance to enter a bidding war arguably made the negotiations easier for us.
