As per the Athletic (subscription required), Manchester United are yet to find an agreement with goalkeeper David de Gea over a new contract.
The Spaniard’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of this month. Both parties are still considering respective options amidst lack of time.
The Red Devils are relaxed about the situation because they do not see 30th June as a deadline for the player’s contract extension. That might turn into a problem because he becomes a free agent on 1st July and clubs may come circling around with massive wage offers, knowing that the transfer fee is zero.
The report also reveals that if the resolution is not reached, United would look to sign replacements soon in the summer transfer window.
Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is on the top of the transfer shortlist. United boss Erik ten Hag is satisfied with what he has seen from the Cameroon international, having worked with him at Ajax.
Ten Hag’s system relies on goalkeepers being good with the ball at their feet. De Gea was anything but throughout the 2022/23 season. That probably affected his confidence in saving shots as well. He was at fault for the second Manchester City goal in the FA Cup final when a soft Ilkay Gundogan shot from a long way out beat him.
It is interesting to see what happens in the coming days. One thing is clear if de Gea stays at the club, he has to massively improve his game to match what ten Hag wants from his goalkeeper.

If not, then it might not be a bad idea to let the Spaniard go for free and concentrate on potentially signing Onana in July or August. After all, he is 32 and has been showing signs of decline recently.
