Manchester United and David de Gea ‘close’ to agreeing new contract terms

Manchester United and David de Gea are ‘close’ to agreeing a new contract, with the shot-stopper set to become a free agent at the end of the season, according to ESPN.

The Spain international’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire in the upcoming summer. However, the Old Trafford side feel fresh terms between the two parties are on the horizon.

As a result, the 32-year-old will extend his stay at the Manchester-based club. In order to do so, the goalkeeper will take a pay cut, but with significant performance-related bonuses.

Most of the details of the contract between De Gea and United have been finalised. However, the two parties are still in discussion regarding the structure of the deal.

The Red Devils are continuing to monitor several shot-stoppers for now. But the Old Trafford side are optimistic about keeping hold of the former Atletico Madrid star.

In the summer of 2011, United signed the 32-year-old from Los Rojiblancos. Since then, the Spaniard has been the number one for the Red Devils for the majority of the years.

Under Erik ten Hag, De Gea has retained his place as the number one. Since last season, the veteran goalkeeper has been in imperial form for the Old Trafford side, making some clutch saves.

However, when it comes to ball distribution, the 32-year-old leaves a lot to be desired. That has evidently been an issue in the current campaign, with the former Ajax head coach looking to play out from the back.

But Ten Hag does not have a luxury of options at his disposal. The goalkeeping department consists of Tom Heaton and Crystal Palace loanee Jack Butland as backups.

But regardless of De Gea’s struggles with the ball at his feet, his shot-stopping ability makes him one of the best in the world. Therefore, it would be wise to keep hold of the Spaniard for some more time as we look for his worthy successor.
