Premier League legend defends Man United star following controversial red card vs Crystal Palace

Alan Shearer comes to the defence of Manchester United ace Casemiro

Last night’s match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace saw a red card incident involving United midfielder Casemiro, which has sparked a debate among fans and experts alike.

However, Alan Shearer has come to the defence of the player, saying that the decision to send him off was unfair. According to Shearer (h/t Metro), there was a ‘melee in the corner’ of the field, with multiple players pushing, shoving, and grabbing each other

The referee was sent to the VAR screen to review the incident, but the angle shown was from behind Casemiro and in slow motion. Shearer argues that there was another angle from behind Hughes that showed the situation in a different light.

He also points out that there was more going on in the incident, with players like Ayew pushing and slapping Fred. He believes that Casemiro was unlucky to be given a red card based on the angle shown by the VAR.

There have been different takes on the incident and one basic thing about the whole issue is how avoidable the whole incident was. Ultimately, Man United did manage to win the game but it was much closer after the red card.

Speaking about the situation, here is what Shearer had to say about the incident and why he thought the midfielder was unlucky.

“The referee is actually sent to the screen because of that, but the angle that he’s shown – he’s shown a still, and then he’s showed it in slow motion – in that position [from behind Casemiro] from that angle. But there’s another angle where it doesn’t look anywhere near as bad”

Having just returned from suspension, the absence of Casemiro is set to affect Man United a lot. The Brazilian’s suspension period is not yet known and there is a chance he could be banned for more than one game.

Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay are set to miss out for the next few weeks/ months due to an injury. With Casemiro also absent, it leaves Erik ten Hag scrambling for options to play in midfield for the next few games.

Casemiro, with a little more sanity, could have completely avoided this red card. It happened in the heat of the moment and nothing can be done to change that now.
