Manchester United hold ‘initial negotiations’ with AS Monaco and France defender Axel Disasi
AS Monaco star Axel Disasi is being eyed by Manchester United, with the Red Devils already having held ‘initial negotiations’ for the defender, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Old Trafford side are interested in acquiring the France international’s services. To that end, the club have held talks with the 24-year-old and his camp regarding a move to Manchester.
It is anticipated that Disasi will leave the Ligue 1 outfit in the ongoing transfer window or in the summer of 2023. Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also interested in him.
Spurs have looked shaky in defence under Antonio Conte this season. Players like Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies have struggled. On the other hand, David Moyes’ team are also not having the best of campaigns and are near the relegation zone.
Disasi joined Monaco in the summer of 2020 from Stade Reims. Since then, the France international has been a regular for the Ligue 1 outfit.
The 24-year-old is strong in the air. In the current campaign, he has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Les Monegasques, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
Disasi also made it to Didier Deschamps’ 2022 World Cup squad. The 24-year-old featured for his country in a few games in Qatar, primarily playing as a right-back. But France lost the final to Argentina in the end.
United’s backline is stacked at the moment. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been preferred by Erik ten Hag in the current campaign. While Harry Maguire has been underwhelming in Manchester, the 29-year-old shone at the 2022 World Cup for England.

Victor Lindelof is also at the Dutch manager’s disposal while Luke Shaw has impressed recently playing as a centre-back. Thus, for now, another defender does not seem to be the priority. However, further down the line, Disasi could be looked at as an option by the club.
