Newcastle United have leapfrogged Manchester United in the pursuit of AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi

According to Florian Plettenberg (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United have taken the leap ahead of Manchester United in the pursuit of AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

Disasi has been deemed as the primary target for United after Kim Min-jae decided to move to FC Bayern Munich but it seems like United could lose out on another defensive target.

The strategy of the club has changed since the summer transfer window started with a portion of the allocated funds being used to strengthen the goalkeeping department.

This has led the club to deviate from the plans of signing a new centre-back, which would partially be dependent on certain players leaving the club.

Club captain Harry Maguire is one of the names mentioned, who could leave the club for the right price and the funds received would be used to bring in another central defender.

This is partly the reason that we have not accelerated the deal concerning Disasi with the club’s priority right now would be to get a new No. 1 as well as a proven goalscorer.

Any deals post this would be hugely dependent on the funds received from the sale of certain players and would only happen late in the transfer window.

This could potentially lead us to lose the primary targets as in this case with Newcastle having leapfrogged United for the signing of Disasi.

Losing a primary target to a direct rival is bound to be more painful especially when the two clubs would be competing for the same places come next season.

Hopefully, the recruitment team is aware of the developments and if they are serious about getting the French defender in the ranks then some urgency needs to be shown.
