Premier League rivals Chelsea have sealed an agreement with AS Monaco to sign Manchester United target Axel Disasi, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Blues are set to exchange paperwork and documents to complete a move for the centre-back soon. To acquire the France international’s services, the Stamford Bridge side will pay the Ligue 1 outfit €45 million.

As things stand, the 25-year-old is set to have his medical in the coming days. The defender has already agreed a five-year contract with the West London club with an option for another season, i.e., until June 2029.

The Old Trafford side have held interest in Disasi. Newcastle United also have the centre-back on their radar. However, neither of the teams put in a bid to get a hold of his signature.

Monaco signed the French national in the summer of 2020. Since then, the defender has been a key player for the Red and Whites.

He was pivotal to the Ligue 1 outfit’s plans last season as well. He made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing four assists, which is relatively impressive for a central defender.

At United, the backline is stacked with decent centre-back options for now. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were Erik ten Hag’s preferred duo in the previous campaign and they have formed a solid partnership at the Old Trafford side.

The gaffer can also call upon Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. In the 2022/23 term, the two provided adequate cover in defence on most occasions, especially the Swedish national.

Therefore, bolstering the central defensive position is arguably not a priority position for the Red Devils to bolster right now. While Disasi is a promising and experienced defender, it remains to be seen how the French national will perform at Chelsea.
