Manchester United are interested in signing FC Bayern Munich striker Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has made known in public his desire of signing a new striker in the January transfer window in a bid to bolster his chances of a top-four finish.
Now, according to Florian Plettenberg (h/t the Express), United have shown interest in signing FC Bayern Munich’s striker Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting in their search for a new striker, after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in November.
Choupo-Moting has been in sensational form this season for Bayern and has scored 11 goals in 16 games in all competitions and provided a really suitable backup once talisman Sadio Mane got injured.
Cameroon forward showed excellent qualities at the FIFA World Cup and with Premier League experience under his belt having played for Stoke City before, it could be a shrewd option for us heading into the second half of the season.
After Ronaldo’s departure, Martial is the only viable centre forward in the squad and with his recurring injury issues, failure to sign a forward could potentially be catastrophic for our top-four hopes.
Ten Hag has exceeded every expectation of when he arrived at the Wheel and with 18 wins in his first 25 games, he definitely has shown that he is the right man to take the club forward.
Now, he needs backing from the board to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle United, who have been splashing cash recently in acquiring major talents from across Europe.
One of the main reasons behind the lack of splurge of cash at United is the uncertainty regarding the change of ownership with the Glazers ready to cash in after owning the club for seventeen years.
With the question around, the owners do not want to spend a huge amount on any player and hence the recruitment team is advised to look at cheaper and viable alternatives.
Choupo-Moting’s current contract at Bayern expires at the end of the current season (Transfermarkt) and hence provides an opportunity for us to strike a cut-price deal or else allow Bayern to risk losing the player for free.
More than the contract situation, at United, the striker would definitely get more minutes and at the same time, add another top club to his illustrious C.V. of playing for Bayern and Paris St. Germain.
