Manchester United and Arsenal will have to pay AS Monaco £34.4 million this summer in order to acquire the services of Axel Disasi, according to RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils are interested in getting a hold of the defender’s signature in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, Erik ten Hag is set to hold a discussion with the 25-year-old ‘shortly’.

However, the Old Trafford side are not the only team eyeing the France international. The Gunners are also keeping tabs on him. Premier League rivals Chelsea also have the centre-back on their radar.

Monaco signed Disasi in the summer of 2020. Since then, the defender has been ever-present in the Ligue 1 outfit’s starting lineup.

The 25-year-old is versatile and can also play on the right-hand side of the defence, as was seen during the 2022 World Cup. However, the French national has mostly played as a centre-back at club level.

Arsenal are coming off of a fruitful season. The North London side almost pipped Manchester City to the league title. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes were Mikel Arteta’s preferred duo at the back. But the Gunners seemingly lack quality in depth with Rob Holding on the bench.

On the other hand, United have a stacked backline. Ten Hag mostly relied on Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the previous campaign. However, Victor Lindelof did a decent job as well when called upon.

The Sweden international played a pivotal role towards the end of last season, with the World Cup-winning Argentine on the sidelines. Harry Maguire is also at the gaffer’s disposal for now. The Dutch manager also played Luke Shaw in central defence to good effect on a few occasions.

Therefore, unless the Red Devils lose a few players at the back, we evidently have enough personnel at the back as things stand. But will the Old Trafford side still opt to add Disais to their ranks this summer? Only time will tell.
