Danny Murphy urges Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to join Premier League rivals Newcastle United
Former Liverpool ace Danny Murphy has urged Manchester United star Harry Maguire to join Premier League rivals Newcastle United. The ex-midfielder feels the 29-year-old can thrive under Eddie Howe.
The England international has lost his place in the Red Devils’ starting lineup. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have overtaken the centre-back in the pecking order. The France and Argentine duo have been solid for the Old Trafford side.
Writing in his column in the Daily Mail (h/t Express), Murphy believes Maguire will want to leave United if he cannot get back in the team. The former midfielder sees the Tyneside outfit as an option for the England international.
“I don’t think the United captain will want to hang around Old Trafford beyond the summer as a bit-part player and there won’t be any shortage of interest if he’s allowed to leave. I can see him at Newcastle United, for example, where Eddie Howe will appreciate his strength and leadership.”
The Red Devils signed the 29-year-old from Leicester City in 2019 after his brilliant displays at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Initially, the England international was decent for the Old Trafford side and was even handed the captain’s armband after a few months.
Unfortunately, since last season, Maguire has been unable to find his feet in Manchester. The 29-year-old has struggled in our backline and made a lot of errors.
At the start of the 2022/23 campaign, Erik ten Hag gave the English national a run in the side. However, the defender faltered as we lost the opening two games in the English top flight under the Dutch manager.
Subsequently, Ten Hag dropped Maguire and replaced him with Varane. Since then, due to the former Real Madrid star’s displays, the 29-year-old has hardly started a PL game for us.
An injury during the last international break before the World Cup in Qatar did not help the former Leicester star’s cause either. The English defender has started just three games in the league this season.

Thus, it will seemingly be tough for Maguire to reclaim his place in the starting XI even after his performances in Qatar. Varane and Martinez also had a great time in the Middle East, with the latter lifting the prestigious trophy.
