Manchester United are still interested in FC Porto and Portugal shot-stopper Diogo Costa, according to A Bola (h/t Manchester Evening News).

Even though the goalkeeper signed a new contract at the Primeira Liga outfit recently until the summer of 2027 (transfermarkt), the Red Devils are still eyeing the 23-year-old’s signature.

The Dragoes tied Costa down to a new deal amidst Spanish giants Barcelona and Premier League outfit Chelsea keeping tabs on the goalkeeper. The Portuguese now has a release clause of £64 million in his new deal.

Graham Potter’s team have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Senegal international Edouard Mendy in the squad. The Spaniard has pipped the former Stade Rennais shot-stopper in the pecking order. However, the 28-year-old still leaves a lot to be desired.

The Porto star has had an excellent start to the 2022/23 campaign. His performances in the Champions League for the Primeira Liga outfit have been exceptional.

However, Costa did have a few unsavoury moments at the 2022 World Cup. The 23-year-old was a bit at fault for Morocco’s goal as the Atlas Lions dumped Portugal out of the prestigious tournament by a scoreline of 1-0.

David de Gea is currently the number one in between the sticks for United. The 32-year-old has been one of our best players since last season.

While the Spaniard made a few moments initially under Erik ten Hag, he has bounced back admirably. The former Atletico Madrid star has also evidently improved his distribution, something the Dutch manager is seemingly keen on.

Those who have seen Costa play regularly know that the shot-stopper is decent with the ball at his feet. Barring the errors in Qatar, the 23-year-old has looked promising during his time at Porto. But it remains to be seen whether the club will replace De Gea with the Portuguese.
