Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is eyeing the signature of Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy, according to Spanish publication Defensa Central (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils, along with Premier League rivals Chelsea, are interested in signing the 27-year-old from Los Blancos. But the Blues signed Marc Cucurella in the summer of 2022 to provide competition for Ben Chilwell.

However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has had a mixed start to life in West London. On the other hand, the English left-back has had a tough time with injuries at the Stamford Bridge side over the years.

As for United, we signed Tyrell Malacia in the recent transfer window from Feyenoord. The 23-year-old initially made a mark in the Old Trafford side’s first team.

Erik ten Hag opted for the Holland international ahead of Luke Shaw for some time this season. However, the England international has got his place back in the team over the last few fixtures for the Red Devils.

The former Southampton star was also pivotal for the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup. He started in every game for Gareth Southgate’s team. However, England lost to France in the quarter-finals.

Mendy signed for Madrid in the summer of 2019 from Olympique Lyon. Initially, the France international had impressed at the Santiago Bernabeu side. However, it seems he is surplus to requirements at Los Blancos.

In the current campaign, the 27-year-old has been Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice at left-back. He has made 17 appearances for the Spanish champions in all competitions this season. However, the defender did not make the cut for Didier Deschamps’ 2022 World Cup squad.

Thus, it remains to be seen whether Madrid are looking to sell Mendy. But even if the France international is available, we already have enough depth with Shaw and Malacia in the squad for now.
