Manchester United-linked Matheus Cunha set for Wolverhampton Wanderers move from Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid star Matheus Cunha, who has been linked with Manchester United, is set to move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 23-year-old was supposedly destined to join the Red Devils in the recent transfer window and has been associated with the Old Trafford side in recent months. However, he will join Wolves on an initial loan deal.
Apart from the Manchester-based club, West Ham United were also eyeing the Brazil international. But it looks like the two clubs are going to miss out on the forward’s signature.
Cunha joined Atletico last year from Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin. However, the 23-year-old has been unable to cement his place in Diego Simeone’s plans at the Madrid-based club.
His performances have not been special either. In the current campaign, the Brazilian has featured 17 times for Los Rojiblancos in all competitions, scoring zero goals and providing two assists.
Subsequently, the centre-forward was also left out of Tite’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. The Canarinho have made it to the quarter-finals in Qatar, where they will face Croatia.
Man United currently have Anthony Martial as the only natural motion for the number nine position. Unfortunately, the AS Monaco star has struggled to stay this season.
As a result, Marcus Rashford has been deployed by Erik ten Hag up front for most of the campaign. The 25-year-old has done well under the Dutch manager.

However, Ten Hag has one less player to call upon with Cristiano Ronaldo’s untimely departure. Thus, a striker is evidently needed to bolster the front line. However, Cunha has not shown consistency at Atletico and United should not be worried about not being able to get him.
