Wolves striker Matheus Cunha upset with Manchester United loss and rues over penalty decision

Matheus Cunha, who plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves), is upset with the loss versus Manchester United and has rued not being given a penalty.

The Molineux Stadium side took on the Red Devils on 14 August at Old Trafford in the Premier League. In the end, the Manchester-based club came out on top after beating the West Midlands-based club 1-0.

Cunha started the match for Wolves. In the 77th minute, the Brazil international was replaced by Favio Silva. Gary O’Neil’s team looked threatening and went toe-to-toe with United for most of the match.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former Atletico Madrid forward expressed his disappointment at not being able to get more from the game against the Red Devils. Not being given a penalty was also something the 24-year-old could not digest.

“Upset is the word. We worked a lot. We need to keep improving. We mixed the new ideas and the old ideas. I’m a little upset with that result. It’s a very hard decision. For me it’s a penalty but you need to respect.”

For most of the match, the Old Trafford side’s forwards found it difficult to find the back of the net. Thankfully, in the 76th minute, a ball into the box by Aaron Wan-Bissaka was met by Raphael Varane, who managed to get the better of Jose Sa.

However, towards the end of the match, Andre Onana seemingly had a rush of blood to his head and almost gave away points. The Cameroonian came rushing when a cross was played in by Wolves.

Instead of making contact with the ball, the 27-year-old clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic. VAR had a look at the incident and luckily decided against awarding a penalty late in the game.

The first half saw both teams creating chances and failing to hit the target. Cunha was at the centre of the Molineux Stadium side’s attacking runs. However, in the second half, it was O’Neil’s team who looked more threatening, with the Brazilian once again leading by example.

Considering the flow of the game, United were fortunate to come out with a win and grab the three points. Hopefully, Erik ten Hag will be able to fine-tune the team ahead of our next fixture and get the team to play in a better rhythm.
