Liverpool join Manchester United in transfer race for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester United have been joined by Premier League rivals Liverpool in the race for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, according to ESPN (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Merseysiders have emerged as one of the candidates for the 23-year-old’s signature. They are interested in bringing him to Anfield amidst long-standing links to the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag’s team were eyeing the Holland international in the recent transfer window. Eventually, the Old Trafford side bought Antony from Ajax to bolster the frontline.
Gakpo has been in inspirational form for the Eredivisie outfit in the 2022/23 campaign. Under the management of United icon Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV, he has taken big strides.
In 23 appearances for the Red and Whites in all competitions, he has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists. The Holland international has also broken into his national side and has become a key figure for Louis van Gaal.
The 23-year-old usually plays on the left-hand side of the attack. At the Manchester-based club, Ten Hag has given Alejandro Garnacho a chance on the left wing in recent weeks. And the young Argentine has been energetic.
Jadon Sancho has played on the left-hand side of the attack for the majority of this season. However, after an encouraging start under the Dutch manager, the former Borussia Dortmund star has failed to keep up the pace.
Marcus Rashford is also capable of playing out wide. However, Ten Hag has preferred the England international in a more central role. He has pipped Cristiano Ronaldo to the number nine position in the starting lineup on most occasions.

Antony has cemented his place on the right. And while we have options on the left, Gakpo would evidently add more strength in depth and competition to the squad. However, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side are able to sign him in the coming transfer windows.
