Barcelona to compete with Manchester United in the race for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester United will have to contend with Barcelona in the race for the signature of PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, according to Diario SPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Blaugrana are eyeing a move for the 23-year-old who is shining in the Eredivisie this season. The forward has become an important part of the Netherlands national team as well.
In the recent transfer window, the Red Devils wanted to bring the Holland international to Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag even had conversations with him in the summer of 2022. However, a deal did not end up materialising.
And ahead of the January transfer window, Gakpo is still on United’s radar. The 23-year-old is in fine form for PSV in the current campaign. He has featured 22 times for the Eredivisie outfit, scoring 13 goals and providing 16 assists.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy, a United icon, as head coach, the Holland international has developed into a fearsome goalscorer. Oranje fans will also expect him to be a key player for them when the World Cup in Qatar commences in the next few weeks.
The Red Devils have a number of attacking options for Ten Hag to choose from. However, goalscoring has seemingly been an issue for us this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was our talisman in the previous campaign, has had a torrid season in front of goal. And the new gaffer does not seem to favour the 37-year-old in the team, with Marcus Rashford preferred in the centre-forward role.
On the wings, Jadon Sancho and Antony have seen a majority of the game time under Ten Hag. However, the former Borussia Dortmund star has been unable to cement his place on the left of the attack.
