Rio Ferdinand sympathises with Manchester United star Harry Maguire after England vs Germany
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has sympathised with Harry Maguire after his performance for England against Germany. The 29-year-old had a tough time on the pitch against Die Mannschaft.
The Three Lions took on the 2014 World Cup winners at Wembley Stadium for the final group stage match of the UEFA Nations League. Both sides had nothing to play for except pride. The game ended 3-3.
Speaking after the game on his official Twitter handle (h/t Manchester Evening News), Ferdinand felt sorry for Maguire. The ex-Red Devil, who made his name playing as a centre-back for United for 12 years, wants the 29-year-old to be mentally strong.
“I feel for Harry…. every mistake being punished & scrutinised – comes with the territory though.
“Needs to be strong mentally to get through this! Playing with no games at this level always leaves u open.”
Maguire was responsible for a couple of goals. The United defender gave away a penalty after a foul on Jamal Musiala. Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan scored from the spot in the 52nd minute.
The 29-year-old was once again at fault in the build-up to Germany’s second goal. Maguire gave away the ball, which led to Hansi Flick’s side countering England. And Kai Havertz put the finishing touch on the move in the 67th minute with a brilliant strike.
However, Gareth Southgate’s team were able to claw their way back. First, Luke Shaw halved the German’s lead. Then Mason Mount levelled the scoring. And the Three Lions had a bit of luck as they were awarded a penalty, which Harry Kane slotted past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
All of this happened within a span of 12 minutes. Unfortunately, Nick Pope spilt the ball in the final stages of the game, giving Havertz the opportunity to level the proceedings in the 87th minute.
