Manchester United stars had a mixed day at the office in England’s 3-3 draw against Germany with Luke Shaw finally breaking England’s goal drought whilst Harry Maguire continues to disappoint having conceded a penalty.

In what was largely a poor display from both the teams, it was only in the second half that the game really burst into life. Harry Maguire tripped Jamal Musiala inside the area in the 52nd minute and Germany were awarded a penalty.

In what was yet another poor display from the Manchester United captain, his error meant that England were on the verge of losing yet another game. Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who stepped up to take the penalty slotted the ball home comfortably.

Things kept going from bad to worse for England as a Kai Havertz screamer from outside the box in the 67th minute saw the Three Lions trailing 2-0 to Hansi Flick’s side with not much time left for England to turn it around.

Just when Gareth Southgate’s team were looking down and out, things turned around for England. Harry Maguire may not have vindicated Southgate’s selection last night but one player who definitely did was Luke Shaw.

Speaking about the Manchester United left-back ahead of the clash against the Germans, Southgate went on to place his trust in him and boy, what a decision that was!

“We’ve got some options there. Luke [Shaw] got into the game well the other night so it’s a good opportunity to start him. He’s a super player”

It would have come as a welcome boost for Shaw who has struggled with form and injuries since the start of the season and has seen his place taken away by new signing Tyrell Malacia who has impressed until now.

Elsewhere, something else for Manchester United to keep an eye out for is the injury suffered by John Stones last night ahead of the derby this weekend. The Man City star seemed to have injured his hamstring and it remains to be seen if he is available for the clash against the Red Devils.

Overall, it has been a day of contrasting emotions for Manchester United fans but one thing that has remained consistent is the poor performance of Harry Maguire and all that we can do at this point is laugh about it and move on.

Thankfully, the Red Devils now have a solid centre-back pairing in Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez and let’s hope the duo continue in the same vein for the rest of the season and beyond.
