Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim dismisses possibility of signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United
Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has dismissed the possibility of signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. The Portuguese head coach feels the prospect is non-existent.
The 37-year-old re-joined the Red Devils last summer. Having left for Real Madrid in 2009, the legendary number seven returned to the place where he made a name for himself in 2021. But now, only after one season, Ronaldo seemingly wants an exit.
Sporting CP have been one of the clubs linked as a potential destination for the wantaway striker. But in a pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester Evening News), Amorim discarded the talks that Ronaldo could join the Primeira Liga giants.
“He is a Manchester United player and I will not be commenting on possibilities that don’t exist. He is a Manchester United player and it looks like he will continue [there].”
A reason being mooted for the Portugal international’s discontent at Manchester is the lack of Champions League football this season. The 37-year-old remains in United’s plans, though, with the club unwilling to part ways.
Ronaldo important for United
Ronaldo finished last season as the Red Devils’ top goalscorer. He bagged 24 goals in all competitions for a United side that struggled throughout the campaign.
The Portuguese was the only player in the forward line that carried the team. Other than him only Bruno Fernandes managed double figures in terms of goals.
We missed out on a top-four berth in the previous campaign as our attack faltered and our defence looked shaky. Last summer’s acquisitions, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane also failed to make a difference.
The new season has started in a similar fashion. We lost 2-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion. United played without a recognised striker. Anthony Martial was injured and Ronaldo hasn’t prepared much under Erik ten Hag during pre-season. Christian Eriksen had to be deployed as a centre-forward.
