Man City will not target Joao Felix amid potential Manchester United interest

According to journalist Jonathan Shrager on Twitter (h/t The Express), Man City have not decided to target Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix amidst potential interest from Manchester United for a probable transfer. He was linked with a move to join the Premier League champions, but that seems not to be the case with this update.

Felix’s availability on the market has seen him get linked with a move to the Premier League. Manchester City were one of the clubs linked with them as they could sell Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus this summer. However, Pep Guardiola is unlikely to target the Atletico ace as he feels the forward is not the right fit for his system.

That could be a boost for Man United, who have been touted as a potential destination with Chelsea also in the same boat. However, the former will need to deal with Tottenham Hotspur, who are also chasing after Felix right now, if they register their interest in securing his services.

Would Man Utd pursue Felix?

The Portuguese international was once considered to be among the best young talents in world football. However, he has failed to hit the same heights at Wanda Metropolitano that he had shown at Benfica, which has halted his progress to fulfilling his full potential.

Perhaps, the 22-year-old’s playstyle may not have suited Diego Simeone’s famed defensive tactics, which did receive lots of criticism during their tie against the Citizens in last season’s Champions League. As such, one could say that Felix could perform well otherwise where his strengths are used to the full extent.

Felix is primarily a second striker who can also play as a centre-forward in a two-man attacking front and even on both wings. Ten Hag’s side does need someone young to back up Cristiano Ronaldo in the attack, while the right-wing is also short-handed at this moment.

Felix did record his best-ever campaign for Atleti last time around, but he ran into an unfortunate injury just when he was performing at his usual best. He scored ten goals alongside six assists from 34 matches across all competitions, which is a solid return when playing for Simeone’s team.

Guardiola’s current stance would have helped us if we were in the running for Felix as of now. But that is not the case, plus it would be best if it continues to be so looking at the forward’s current valuation. The La Liga side have put a £103.7million price tag with the attacker currently tied down until 2026.

That is certainly not feasible for us as it is well past high time that we make smart signing rather than spending large sums in a single go. After all, we want to prevent a repeat of what happened with Paul Pogba, so it would be best if Felix is not targeted in our current delicate situation.
