Barcelona reject a second transfer bid from Manchester United for Frenkie de Jong
According to the Spanish news outlet Marca (h/t Daily Mail), Barcelona have turned down the second bid put forward by Manchester United to facilitate a transfer for Frenkie de Jong. He has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for quite some time, but no significant progress has been made so far.
Man United’s latest offer amounts to £56million, which Barca are unwilling to accept for de Jong’s services. The Spanish club are adamant that a sale would only be finalised for £65million, which means that the English side are still £8million short of the current asking price.
Erik ten Hag is eager to reunite with the Dutch international, having made him one of his priority targets this summer. Despite that, the Red Devils are finding it difficult to reach an agreement even after the CEO Richard Arnold confirmed that money is not an issue for them in their pursuit of de Jong.
More frustrations!
This update is quite interesting, to say the least when thinking about the amount the Glazers have withdrawn from the Manchester side in the form of dividends. One would have thought that they would try to reinvest that sum in the current delicate situation.
What’s interesting is that the £11million in dividends paid to the owners could have been used to meet the Catalans’ price tag of de Jong. Unfortunately, that is not what happened at this point, which means that we are yet to make any signings, even when our direct rivals have made their moves.
We are not in a position to haggle and reduce the valuation as Xavi Hernandez’s side are no longer dependent on their transfer plans or their issues with FFP at this point. Furthermore, the 25-year-old is contracted until 2026 right now, which gives more control to the La Liga side over his future.

It remains to be seen how our attempt to sign the former Ajax man will turn out to be in the coming weeks up ahead. We have spent quite a long time on this path with no changes so far, which has led to frustrations within the fanbase.
We are desperate for additions in the centre of the pitch, but those behind the curtains must realise that it should not come at the cost of losing out on our other targets. As such, it would be in our best interests if a resolution is found soon, but whether that will happen or not would only be known in due time.
