Transfer News: Chelsea and Arsenal rival Manchester United for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips

According to 90min, Chelsea and Arsenal pose competition to Manchester United in pursuit to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the future transfer windows. He has enjoyed a rapid rise to the top over the past year or so following his excellent campaign in the 2022 Euros.

Newcastle United and Liverpool are also monitoring the situation as they look to prise Phillips away from others. He was also subjected to a failed transfer attempt from West Ham United to sign him in the January transfer window. Leeds did not entertain the £50million bid and had rejected the offer firmly last month.

The Englishman has a contract with the Whites until 2024, which does give them some breathing room amidst the increased interest. However, they are still lamenting over the fact that a renewal has not taken place at this instant. The initial negotiations began last year, but the follow-up talks have not started since then, leading to the current situation.

More concerns

The entry of the Blues and Mikel Arteta’s side would be concerning, to say the least, due to the increased competition. Moreover, it gives the 26-year-old more options to choose from, which does not favour us due to our bitter rivalry with his club.

It would have been challenging to get the Leeds star’s services regardless of the new entrants because of the presence of the Reds and Newcastle. There is the possibility of West Ham returning to the fold as they were interested in him last month. Hence, it would not be too much of a reach to say that they could also be in the mix moving forward.

The England international is one of the lowest earners in his team despite his importance being among the best under Marcelo Bielsa. That could be one of the ways we can try to convince the central midfielder to move to Old Trafford.

More Manchester United News

We desperately need some midfielders in our ranks as the current set of options has certain limitations. Those shortcomings also played a role in our struggles this season, even though the issue should have been addressed before the current campaign had even started.

Paul Pogba could leave on a free transfer next summer, whereas we should look towards moving out Nemanja Matic. It is also unknown whether Donny van de Beek would have any role with us once his loan spell ends with Everton. Fred and Scott McTominay are not technically gifted, which prevents us from having control during matches.

There are more than enough reasons to pursue the English midfield star, but it remains to be seen if we would be successful in it or not.
