Transfer News: Chelsea join Manchester United in race for Kalvin Phillips

According to The Si & Dan Talk Chelsea Podcast (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are set to enter the race to sign talented English midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.

The midfielder who progressed through the youth ranks of Leeds United has gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and even for England. Phillips broke through under Marcelo Bielsa and has gone on to grow from strength to strength ever since.

Despite being injury-ridden this season, the 26-year-old has had extensive influence on the Leeds United team whenever fit. The talented midfielder has played 23 times this season scoring one goal and providing one assist across all competitions.

Manchester United and Manchester City have both been in the reckoning for the talented Englishman but now Chelsea, who are keen on buying a midfielder, have supposedly thrown the hat in the ring for Kalvin Phillips.

A quality option?

The Yorkshire lad is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and will be a great signing if we manage to pull this off.

It is no surprise any longer that we are trying to do a massive rebuild this summer under new manager Erik ten Hag and will undoubtedly be looking to sign new players to reinforce their squad and build a competitive team for next season.

Midfield is an area that we will undoubtedly have to reinvest in this summer. Paul Pogba has left the club this summer on a free transfer. Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are also on their way out. Fred and Mctominay have been inconsistent at best.

We still don’t know what kind of formation ten Hag is planning to use at Old Trafford next season. Regardless, a player like Phillips is capable of playing as the sole holding midfielder or also a part of a midfield two. Having played under a manager like Bielsa, the 26-year-old has even played as a makeshift centre-back.

Manchester City and Chelsea being in the race for the talented midfielder is not good news. Regardless, if he comes here, Kalvin Phillips can be the face of the project at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen if a move for the Englishman materialises though.
