Manchester United ace Raphael Varane reveals his ambitions to win the FA Cup ahead of Aston Villa tie

Speaking to the club’s official website, Manchester United ace Raphael Varane revealed his ambitions to lift the FA Cup this season ahead of facing Aston Villa on Monday night.

The Red Devils are set to host the Villans at Old Trafford, and it is important to get off on the right foot. Ralf Rangnick & co were unable to produce an inspiring performance in the first game of the year against Wolves, and it is now time to make amends.

One player that could help to do the same is Raphael Varane. The French international was signed in the summer but has experienced difficulties due to a string of injuries. However, it is worth noting that we have only lost once in the 10 games the 28-year-old has started for us this season.

Ahead of a cracking Third Round tie against the Villa Park outfit, the former Real Madrid ace revealed his ambitions to win the competition.

“I know it is an important competition and part of the history of the club, and I know it is exciting for fans. I think it is always exciting and it is another challenge and a new competition [for me]. When it is a new competition [and the start of the competition] you always want to win it and to feel the challenge.

“I always want to be on the pitch and I was waiting to get back to play in front of our fans who have supported me…I think for this year, we just want to do our best on the pitch and to make the fans happy.”

Serial Winner

The French international knows all about winning trophies and is a big-game player. Still only 28, the centre-back has won the World Cup, the UEFA Nations League, 3 Champions League trophies, 1 Copa del Rey, and multiple La Liga titles.

Thus, Varane certainly has the match temperance to play through a Cup competition. Things may be a little problematic at Old Trafford currently but a victory on Sunday could change the dynamic, especially if our side produces a convincing performance.

The Frenchman shall be key in the game, but it would be interesting to see who partners him at the back. Harry Maguire and Phil Jones started the game against Wolves, and oddly enough, it was the latter who played his first senior game in almost two years and had a better game than his captain.

Regardless, a clean sheet is essential since we have failed to keep one in our last three games. Moreover, we have not won the FA Cup since 2016, and it would be good to bring a trophy home this season. We have won the competition 12 times already, and Varane and co can get us off on the right foot to win the 13th by defeating Villa on Monday night.

We cannot take the Villans lightly as for Steven Gerrard and co, these domestic competitions are perhaps their best hope of silverware this season. They would not go easy on us and neither should we.
