Transfer News: Manchester United reject loan offer by Sevilla amidst potential January move for Anthony Martial
According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United have rejected a potential transfer offer from Sevilla for Anthony Martial that would have seen him sign for them on a loan deal in January.
There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of the French international. He has lacked game-time and has had to settle for a place on the bench. His agent, Philippe Lamboley, also made it clear this month that his client wishes to leave Old Trafford in January. The 26-year-old prefers a move to Sevilla, amidst interest from Barcelona and Juventus.
Ralf Rangnick claimed that the player would only be allowed to leave if it is in the best interest of the club. Following this statement, Sevilla made their first offer to sign the striker by proposing a loan deal without an option or obligation to buy which would also see them only pay half of his £150k-per-week wages.
Man United have rejected the deal as they are reluctant to let any players leave on loan. Moreover, if a loan offer is proposed, they are expecting any interested suitors to pay the wages in full on top of an additional loan fee.
Martial to stay at Old Trafford?
The Manchester-based club were never going to accept such a low-lying deal. Martial may not be performing at the moment but he is a top-quality striker when playing at his full potential. Moreover, he is still only 26 and could comfortably lead the line of whichever club he joins in the future.
However, there is unlikely to be a starting spot for him at Old Trafford right now given the amount of attacking talent in the ranks. But that does not mean that John Murtough and the Glazers shall let any club sign him for a minimal fee, which will also entail us to pay half his wages.
Thus, unless Sevilla agree to our terms, we are under no obligation to let the Frenchman leave. Additionally, as mentioned before, Barcelona and Juventus are also interested in landing the centre-forward. So, there are some suitors that could meet our terms for a potential deal but that is something only time will tell, and if they approach us regarding a deal, to begin with.

He is under contract until 2024 and could fight for a place in the starting line-up until then. Man United will be competing in three competitions from February, and Rangnick could use the additional depth in his frontline. Hence, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Martial.
If a reasonable offer comes that compensates us financially in a reasonable manner, then it wouldn’t be a bad call to let him leave for half the season. It is true that we may need our depth in the coming weeks but beyond that, the former AS Monaco striker may not get a lot of consecutive starts under Rangnick. This is one deal that we should keep an eye on.
