Paul Pogba keen to feature under new Manchester United interim-manager Ralf Rangnick

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba is ‘enthused’ by the prospect of playing under new interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.

The French international enjoyed a stellar start to the season, making several assists in his first few games of the campaign. His form has since dropped off and he looks a pale shadow of the player who originally took the league by storm this season.

It has been a difficult few weeks for the 28-year-old. He initially got sent off against Liverpool before injuring himself on international duty with France. With Ole Gunnar Solskajer no more in charge, Pogba will now play for a new manager when he returns to action.

Pogba has been handed a positive appraisal of the German by his contacts. He expects Rangnick to turn around Man United’s fortunes and turn them into title contenders.

While it is good to see Pogba give away good vibes, the chances of the Red Devils challenging for the title seem absurd. Man United are currently 12 points behind Chelsea who are at the top of the Premier League table. While there is still much to play for, there is little hope of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool dropping too many points.

A bridge too far?

More so, Rangnick has been appointed only until the end of the season. Given his short tenure, it would take something special for him to make Man United title challengers. While a top-four finish and a cup or two is possible, it is far from a certainty.

Rangnick is now the man in charge.

Much was expected of Pogba when he moved to Man United in 2016. His second coming has so far yielded just a League Cup and a UEFA Europa League trophy.

Any hopes of enjoying a league challenge have so far gone unfulfilled. With just 25 games left to go and his contract fading, it appears unlikely that the Frenchman will get closer to securing the Premier League championship in our colours.

Pogba is currently in the final few months of his contract at Old Trafford. Whether Rangnick’s appointment will convince him to stay put remains to be seen.

Discussions between the player and the club have so far got nowhere, as evidenced by the contract impasse. The offer is still on the table and just what it will take to convince the Frenchman otherwise is debatable.
