Manchester United star David De Gea reveals he was “fearful” during the 1-1 draw vs Chelsea
Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Absolute Chelsea), David De Gea admitted his fearfulness throughout the game as Manchester United held Chelsea to a draw by a 1-1 scoreline. He kept his side in the game after thwarting the Blues several times.
Jadon Sancho opened the scoring in the second half after he capitalised on a mistake from Jorginho. That came against the run of play as Thomas Tuchel’s team were on the front foot throughout the match. The Italian midfielder did make up for his mistake after scoring a penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Thiago Silva in the box.
The Red Devils would be happy to come out with a point as the hosts were clear favourites in the game. The draw saw Man United in the eighth position with 18 points from 13 matches and, the result could help in turning around their fortunes. De Gea rightfully deserves massive credit for his crucial interventions that gave his team a point.
“I was feeling danger nearly the whole game. They miss big chances and the one we have they give us. it’s a big point.“
Honest Thoughts
It is good to see the 31-year-old being honest about his feelings and conveying that to the fans. The sentiment among the fanbase was similar even though we hoped to get three points from the game as all fans would. It also shows that they understand the team is not in the best place and needs to strive ahead to reach the old heights.
The Spaniard led the team and came up top against Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was on through early in the match. Had he not kept that out, we may have seen a different game, and the save was crucial to build up his momentum.
At the same time, we are not blind to what happened within the game as there were several moments where Tuchel’s side could have taken their chances better, or the luck favoured us. But it is a part of football as the best teams may not always be the victors at the end of a match.

There were rumblings about the lineup and the pressing system, as many felt Ralf Rangnick may have played a part. Gary Neville also picked it up and felt the same as many fans. There were improvements in terms of the efforts, but the structure still needs improvement.
Make your conclusions as you like, but one thing is for sure, this result with the right conditions could help us to turn our season around. We are just five points off the top four and are qualified for the Champions League playoffs. There are still opportunities for us to have a great year regardless of the bad start we had.
