England boss Gareth Southgate issues injury update on Manchester United defender Luke Shaw

According to Manchester Evening News, England coach Gareth Southgate has issued an injury update on Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw following the 5-0 win against Albania in the November Qualifiers.

The England international suffered a head injury during the game against Manchester City and was brought off subsequently. As a result, he had to follow concussion protocols and could not join his international teammates for the first qualifier.

Concussions have been given utmost importance in recent years after they were largely neglected in the past. Shaw was initially included in the national team squad but was pulled out ahead of the first game. Southgate has provided an update on his condition in the post-match interview.

I think Luke and Mason [Mount] are very unlikely now. I think we’re going to run out of time with those two.”

As the England boss suggested, the defender is likely to miss the game against San Marino due to the circumstance. While this has allowed him to get some rest during the international break, it would also be concerning to some supporters.

The degree of concussion has not yet been revealed by the club or country and, a time frame cannot be drawn up. This would be the last thing that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs since Shaw’s return is currently uncertain.

The fullback was criticised at one point in his Man United career, especially during the reign of Jose Mourinho. Alex Telles was brought in to provide competition, but that seemed to have clicked something in him as he dropped one of his best seasons last campaign.

The England defender is yet to replicate the form from last season but is ahead of Telles in the left-back spot. Solskjaer will hope to have his services since United will be running into a tough run of fixtures following the international break.
