Transfer News: Manchester United eye Denis Zakaria of Borussia Monchengladbach amid interest from Man City and AS Roma
According to the Italian website Roma Giallorossa (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United want the services of Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria and are ready to battle Manchester City and AS Roma for him.
The 24-year-old has established himself as a Bundesliga regular and has become one of the key players at his club. His current contract is set to expire next year, meaning he will be available at a discounted price in January should Monchengladbach decide to sell him.
Zakaria could also agree on a pre-contract agreement with other clubs in January since he will become a free agent after this season. United are also in need of a defensive midfielder who could provide balance to their squad, and he could fill that role.
However, the Red Devils will be facing heavy competition from the city rivals, who may need to look at options for life past Fernandinho. Jose Mourinho is also said to have suggested him to the Roma chief as a potential target in the future.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was in the market for a defensive mid in the summer but could not bring in a suitable option. While they have other transfer targets who could fulfil the midfield role, the Swiss international would be feasible due to his low price.
Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United and Declan Rice of West Ham United are some of the targets drawn up by the Glazers. However, both these options would be much more expensive than the Bundesliga midfielder.

It remains to be seen what Man United would do with their options as they could bring in the Swiss midfielder in January or get him for nothing next season. While he may not be a big name signing as Rice or Phillips, he could do the job that the club needs the most currently.
