Transfer News: Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot at AS Roma

According to Calciomercato (h/t The Mirror), Jose Mourinho wants the services of Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot at AS Roma. The Portuguese defender was signed by Mourinho when he was the manager at Old Trafford.

United bought the 22-year-old from Porto for a fee of £19m in 2018 under the advice of the former manager. Following the move, he has not been able to establish himself and was loaned out to AC Milan last season.

Dalot has struggled to earn minutes this season and could be on the way out if the stars align for him. Having not got the game time despite getting hints from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he could look at Donny van de Beek’s situation at the club.

It is claimed that the Chosen One has asked the Roma chief to make the transfer for his former signing. A potential loan move in the January transfer window is studied, which would include an option to buy in the summer.

The defender has made just two starts this season and could look at his former manager, who was full of praise for him during his time at Manchester. Being 22, he is still at the start of his career, and minutes are necessary to ensure growth.

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup looming around the corner, he would miss out on the national team squad if he does not play regularly. A loan deal with an optional buy option would be beneficial for all parties in this situation.

With no signs of any change, it would be best for this potential transfer to happen as soon as it can. There is a line of communication between Manchester and Rome, as was proved by Chris Smalling’s move a few years back. And as for United, Dalot would be off the wage bill and wouldn’t really be missed in the starting XI.
