Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes a jab at Manchester City ahead of the Manchester derby
In an interview ahead of the Manchester derby (h/t Express), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed that Manchester United is still the top team in Manchester according to him.
The Red Devils have had a rocky start to the season. They have relied heavily on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes time and again to get them out of difficult situations. The Norwegian manager has been under a lot of pressure for their performances in recent outings.
Under Sir Alex Fergusson’s reign, the Old Trafford outfit was a force to be reckoned with throughout England and Europe. The Red Devils managed to create a stellar attacking lineup with their infamous treble-winning team in 1999. Despite all these feats they have struggled to maintain that kind of dominance in recent years.
Despite all the tension and chaos, Solskjaer spoke about Man Utd recently with an earnest belief that the Red Devils can bounce back from their latest troubles:
“No, I can’t see it. You have to have respect for what they’ve done in the last 10 years, even more so in the last four or five, with how dominant they’ve been in England and in Europe. But we’re Manchester United, we’re always going to come back. I think we’re the No.1 club in Manchester and that also probably means in the world.”
The 48-year-old Norwegian is still to win his first major title with Manchester United as their manager. The club has struggled to maintain its consistency even though they invested heavily in the last transfer window by purchasing the likes of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
On the other hand, Manchester City have created a feared squad that has won several domestic and top-flight trophies under Spanish manager Pep Guardiola. The Citizens have won the Premier League trophy five times in the last 10 seasons, whereas United’s last top-flight triumph was under Fergusson in 2013. This has even swayed some people to think that Manchester is slowly becoming ‘blue’.

Ole has retained faith in his players and squad. Manchester City haven’t defeated Manchester United in a league match since April 2019, so the recent record still stands in favour of the Red Devils. Ole’s men would be looking to build on their 3-0 triumph against Tottenham Hotspur in their last PL outing and a win against City can really change the mood at United after a tough few weeks for the club.
