According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t ESPN), Manchester United hero and footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo is pushing to join Manchester City this summer.

The 36-year-old developed from a prospect into a world-class player at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson. Ronaldo spent six years at Old Trafford, making 292 appearances across all competitions, scoring 118 goals and assisting 69 more.

He was a key part of the United side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2008 and also secured the Balon d’Or that year. Ronaldo also helped United win three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup and two League Cups. It is fair to say he has a good standing amongst United fans.

A god-tier superstar with Real Madrid, his move to Juventus has been impressive but underwhelming as far as trophies are concerned. With just a year left on his current deal, the Portuguese sensation could be on the move this summer.

While a return to Manchester has always been mooted, Ronaldo could end up sporting the blue jersey of City instead, Pep Guardiola’s side have failed to bring in a replacement for Sergio Aguero and are faltering in their attempts to land Harry Kane.

With Ronaldo potentially available, he could prove to be a short term fix for City’s requirements. It also hands Juventus an opportunity to recoup at least some part of the £99.2 million transfer fee they paid for him in 2018.

Ronaldo has a special place in the hearts of United fans.

One of the finest players to don the United jersey in the Premier League era, Ronaldo still has a massive following amongst the Red Devils faithful. A move to City could tarnish what has been a very amicable relationship.

Such a scenario is not unheard of. Another United legend, Peter Schmeichel too joined City for a solitary season much to the chagrin of his former United teammates. Whether Ronaldo too is set for a similar experience remains to be seen.

Despite being 36, Ronaldo still has a few years left in him. While we remain grateful to his years of service to United, we will not be wishing him the best should he join City. There are some lines in football that one does not cross.
