Transfer News: Tottenham close in on signing Manchester United target Pape Matar Sarr
According to The Athletic (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the capture of FC Metz midfield prodigy Pape Matar Sarr, who is also a target for Manchester United.
The 18-year-old Sarr signed for the French Ligue 1 outfit only last summer and became an instant success story. It took him very little time to become a regular in the side for his new club, as he went on to make 25 appearances in his debut season, scoring four goals.
Sarr broke into the Senegal national team in March earlier this year on the back of his impressive displays for Metz, while he has started both of their games in the new season.

The Daily Mail revealed earlier this month that Manchester United were among the clubs monitoring the progress of the Senegalese midfielder, along with arch-rivals Chelsea and Manchester City. However, as per the latest update, it is Tottenham that have sneaked ahead in the race to sign the 18-year-old Sarr.
While it is stated that an agreement is nearing, the report does mention that a deal is not finalised yet and Spurs may yet face competition from the other Premier League clubs as well as Serie A side Atalanta.
If that is the case, Manchester United must act quickly and make a push for his signing. At 18, Sarr has a long way to go and has shown great potential. With Nemanja Matic not getting any younger, the Metz prodigy can prove to be the long-term heir to the Serb at Old Trafford.

The report adds that there is a possibility that Metz would want to take him back on loan right after selling him, which could work for United as well, as that will ensure his development without any issues over playing time.
It is quite evident that Sarr is a star in the making going by the number of top sides that are pursuing him. As things stand, though, it is Tottenham and not Manchester United that are leading the race.
