Manchester United hopes of signing Leon Goretzka dashed
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are going to miss out on signing Leon Goretzka this summer.
The Red Devils, who have already signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, have been keen on signing a central midfielder this summer.
The Manchester-based outfit have been wanting to strengthen in all areas of the pitch and while they have done so in attack and the defence, the centre of the pitch seems a little skim.
To that end, the Red Devils were apparently targeting the signing of Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich. The German had a largely successful season last year while he also featured in the club’s Champions League triumph in the 2019/20 season. Goretzka’s contract was set to expire in 2022, courtesy of which United were trying to sign the midfielder.
However, those hopes have now come to a halt after Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his official Twitter handle that the German is close to signing a new contract with the Bundesliga giants. He wrote:
“Confirmed and completed. FC Bayern will announce soon Joshua Kimmich contract extension until 2025… and Leon Goretzka will be the next one. Almost done”.
Romano also confirmed that United were never in advanced talks for the player.
“Goretzka has an agreement with Bayern, as per @cfbayern – Man Utd have never been ‘close’ or in advanced talks”.
This is a blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co because, with Nemanja Matic on the wrong side of 30 and uncertainty circling the future of Paul Pogba at the club, Leon Goretzka would have been a pivotal asset to the club.
