Manchester United to put off pursuing Eduardo Camavinga until next summer

According to Eurosport (h/t The Express), Manchester United could hit the pause button in their pursuit of Rennes wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be content with the squad at his disposal and believes he has what he needs for the current campaign. The Red Devils went big this summer, landing both Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane while keeping hold of all their major names.

The Norwegian now has arguably more strength in depth than ever before in his managerial career at United. One position that continues to divide opinion is defensive midfield.

As things stand, Nemanja Matic is our lone specialist defensive midfielder. The 33-year-old is, however, not getting any younger and will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

United’s lack of options in the spot has seen them linked with the likes of Declan Rice, Ruben Neves and Eduardo Camavinga. All three players are young enough to become a mainstay at Old Trafford for years to come.

However United look set to wait until the summer of 2022 to prioritize signing a defensive midfielder. Paul Pogba seems like he will stay for another season and Donny van de Beek has a point to prove at Old Trafford. While there are numbers available to be deployed, whether they are the right players in the position remains to be seen.

Eduardo Camavinga is unlikely to stay at Rennes.

Camavinga has one year left on his deal at Rennes and has shown little inclination to pen a new contact. While the French side are keen to resolve the situation, the player is willing to play the waiting game.

The prospect of landing a potential quality player for free is something that the club should not pass up on. But then whether we do have the upper hand in the race to land him remains to be seen. Either way, United will do well to reinforce the position sooner rather than later.

Camavinga has also made his senior bow for the French national team. And that is quite the feat given the players at Les Bleus’ disposal. Under the right guidance, he could develop into one of the leading midfielders in the game.
