Jamaica keen to convince Manchester United star, Mason Greenwood, to switch allegiance from England
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Jamaica are seeking to persuade Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood to shift his allegiance from England at the international level.
Jamaica are keen to make the cut for next year’s World Cup. They have identified some players who could help them achieve that. Some of these include Michail Antonio, Ravel Morrison, Andre Gray and Kemar Roofe.
Greenwood is easily the high profile name in the list and is seen as one of the best young talents thriving in the English Premier League. Despite turning just 19, he has already made 105 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 29 goals and making 10 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Greenwood was named in Gareth Southgate’s extended 33-man squad ahead of the Euros. Injuries not only forced him out of the team but also saw him miss out on the Under-21 Euros last March. As things stand, the youngster has just a solitary senior cap for England.
Greenwood qualifies for Jamaica via his parents. He could make the switch despite the lone appearance for the Three Lions. According to the report, a senior Jamaica Football Federation source stated that they would welcome the chance to include him in their ranks.
A beaten path
Jamaica are approaching the CONCACAF qualifiers for 2022 with renewed vigour. Captained by Adrian Mariappa they also have the likes of Leon Bailey, plus Bobby Decordova-Reid and Liam Moore amongst their ranks. The likes of Max Aarons, Demarai Gray, Ivan Toney, Liam Moore and Mason Holgate were all targetted in the past.
This is not the first time that they have targetted England stars either. The likes of Frank Sinclair, Robbie Earle and Marcus Gayle all featured for Jamaica at the 1998 World Cup. (h/t Daily Mail)

Greenwood represented England at youth levels before making his senior bow. It makes little sense for him to shift his loyalty to Jamaica given the success he could garner with England. A new young batch of English stars are coming up the ranks and Greenwood could very well be a part of something special if he stays put.
