Transfer News: Manchester United to rival Leicester City for Kerr Smith
According to transfer news from Mirror, Manchester United are battling Leicester City for the signing of Kerr Smith. The Dundee United starlet has a £500,000 release clause but that will increase as he makes more appearances for the side.
The Red Devils have brought in a number of talented young players in recent windows. Smith appears to be the latest youngster on our radar. The 16-year-old has attracted considerable attention from the Premier League. Aston Villa, Chelsea and Everton are also keen on securing his signature.
The defender has also had trials at United as well as the aforementioned clubs. Smith started out as a central midfielder. He has since been converted into a central defender by the coaching staff. It proved to be an inspired decision. He even featured in a friendly against Sheffield United last August. Smith gave a decent account of himself going up against veteran striker Billy Sharp.
Now, the defender is the subject of a tug of war between Manchester United and Leicester City. He does have a modest release clause of £500,000 but that increases when he plays more games. Dundee boss Tam Courts spoke about the situation and interest in Kerr.
“I’m fully aware of Kerr’s contractual situation. As part of my previous job at the club, I know that he’s a player in high-demand. He spent time down at Everton and Manchester United last year so naturally he has a high profile for a 16-year-old footballer. We are pretty comfortable with the clauses in his contract and it’s linked to first-team appearances which we feel are achievable. We feel that we are in control in regards to his market value and we aren’t nervous about the situation.”

Kerr still has two years left on the deal he signed in December last year. United will be hoping they can pip Leicester to the signing of Kerr as he still has a relatively low release clause. However, they will need to hurry as that clause will only increase as he plays more games.
