Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho could pave the way for Jesse Lingard to join West Ham United
According to The Evening Standard, Manchester United closing in on Jadon Sancho is good news for West Ham United, who are after Jesse Lingard.
The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with the Hammers. He has not only enjoyed increased game time but also gave a really good account of himself as a top-flight footballer. He made 16 appearances for the Londoners, scoring nine goals and assisting five. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The United star is keen to continue playing regularly as we go into the 2021/22 season. As things stand, it is something that he will find easier to come by at West Ham rather than Old Trafford.
According to the report, West Ham are waiting for a decision from Lingard as to where he sees his future. Negotiations between the player and the club have been put on hold during Euro 2020 given that Hammers boss David Moyes is working for UEFA as a technical advisor. The Londoners will have to pay over £20million to land their man.
While Lingard would like to stay on at United, the arrival of Sancho could change all that. The 21-year-old will add more competition for spots and Lingard could potentially fall further behind in the pecking order at the club.
The attacking midfielder will enter the final year of his United contract next month. While Lingard will certainly be a useful fringe player, the chances of him being given a starring role seem remote. It makes sense for us to cash in on him this summer when his stock is high.
Lingard is in the prime of his career and can do better than remaining as a backup player at United. He shares a good relationship with David Moyes and could become a key star at West Ham. Having missed out on this summer’s Euros, another strong season with the Hammers could make his job of getting selected for the 2022 Wold Cup easier.
