Manchester United star Marcus Rashford the youngest to ever top the Sunday Times’ Giving List
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford has become the youngest ever topper of the prestigious Sunday Times Giving List.
The list ranks people by how their money raised for charity compares to their net worth. The 23-year-old raised an impressive £20million in donations from supermarkets to help tackle child food poverty in the United Kingdom.
Rashford’s worth at the same time is £16m, meaning his £20m raised is the equivalent of 125% of his current worth. He has a considerable lead over Lord Sainsbury who came in second place with 44.66%. The British politician however outstrips Rashford’s amount by a significant margin.
Rashford helped the charity FareShare distribute four million meals to vulnerable children during the pandemic and also helped bring about a series of Government U-turns over free school meals.
A former beneficiary of the schemes himself, Rashford is well aware of the importance it held to those who availed it. His efforts also earned him an MBE in the delayed 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
The hero we need
Acting as an ambassador for FareShare, Rashford’s efforts have proven life-changing to a large section of the vulnerable. Lindsay Boswell, FareShare’s chief executive believes Rashford’s personal experience combined with his standing as an ace sportsman has proven decisive in their efforts.
“His own experience of relying on free school meals to eat brings authenticity and compassion to his campaigning, and his status as a Premier League footballer means people and politicians sit up and take notice.”
It is clear that the 23-year-old continues to make an impact on and off the field. His efforts will hopefully inspire others to follow in his stead.
