Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward criticized for his founding role in ESL drama

It was reported by The Guardian that Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward did not play an active role in the formation of the European Super League.

In fact, it has been claimed that he became aware of the plans only a day before it was made public. United legend Gary Nevile however scoffed at the suggestions that the 49-year-old was kept in the dark regarding the whole enterprise.

It would appear that the former United skipper has a point. This comes after a Sky Sports report showcased a Premier League executive claim that Woodward was in on the whole plan from day one.

The executive goes on to reveal that it is ‘laughable’ to even suggest Woodward was kept in the dark regarding the enterprise. In fact, he appears to have been in cahoots with those involved since the beginning.

“He was involved in it from day one.”

That would certainly appear to be the case taking his actions into account. Woodward not only resigned from his roles at UEFA but also got called out by UEFA president Aleksander Caferin as a ‘snake’.

Both the Glazers and Woodward are culpable

Caferin and Neville are not the only ones who have reason to disbelieve Woodward. The United honcho had earlier claimed that fans would be made privy to any decision involving United’s participation in the Super League.

Clearly, that has not been the case and fans have since come out in protest against the club’s decision. In the end, Woodward’s role at United ended with a whimper, meeting the same fate as our transfer market hopes under him in recent seasons.

It may very well be the case that Woodward may truly have been in the dark and was just following orders from the Glazers. It is however difficult to believe that he was completely unaware of what was going on around him.

Either way, it reflects poorly on both him and the owners. With the former having already tendered his resignation, the latter will hopefully follow suit.
