Manchester United target Erling Haaland backed to stay on at Dortmund for another season
According to Sky Germany (h/t The Sun), Manchester United have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Bundesliga ace Erling Haaland.
This comes after Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc revealed that the Norwegian striker will stay put at the club until at least 2022.
Haaland is one of the most in-demand players going into the summer window. With Dortmund struggling to qualify for next season’s Champions League, there was hope that he would seek greener pastures.
Zorc has however thrown a spanner in the works by claiming that the player will stay put regardless of where Dortmund finish this season. As things stand, they trail Eintracht Frankfurt in fourth by four points with six games to go.
“The decision will not be made without Borussia Dortmund. No matter where we end up, Erling will continue to play for us.”
Haaland has been key to Dortmund’s hopes this season. He only trails in the race for the Bundesliga golden boot to Robert Lewandowski and could prove pivotal as the Germans make a final push to finish in the top four.
An advantage?
It is no secret that United need a striker and there are few better in world football than Haaland. However, having to wait for another year might well work out in our favour.
Firstly, his release clause worth £65m gets activated in 2022, meaning United could land him for a much lower price in comparison to this summer. Secondly, the Red Devils can build upon the promise they have shown this season and take further steps in their development.
Our ability to reemerge as a major force capable of winning top honours would be yet another point in our favour.

Zorc’s statements came after the player’s agent Mino Raiola embarked on a cross Europe trip to speak to interested teams. Even if we do make a move for Haaland this summer, it is far from a sure thing.
Not only will he cost in excess of £100million this summer but we will have to compete against the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool.
