“Just get on with it”: Former Man United skipper hits out at Red Devils star for ‘nonsense’ interview

Roy Keane tells Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to let his performances do the talking

Speaking on Sky Sports, Roy Keane has told Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes to get on with his game rather than worry about the perception regarding his performances against the top teams.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to life at Old Trafford. He has, however, struggled to impress against the top teams in the league.

While he has had the odd goal or assists against them, it has proven to be an exception rather than the norm. Asked about this drop off in levels, Fernandes was visibly flustered and went on the defensive.

Terming Fernandes’s interview as bizarre, Keane expressed his confusion as to why the midfielder should pay attention to stat merchants or pundits.

“I don’t know why these players worry about pundits, just get on with it.”

As someone who plays for United, Fernandes will be expected to perform every game. Being in the spotlight a lot more is not outside the norm at a superclub such as Manchester United.

Two sides of the same coin!

As someone who has been there and done that, Keane knows exactly what he is talking about. While he praised Fernandes for his efforts, he also believes it is only normal if the criticism is levied if the result goes sideways.

“If he doesn’t turn up in the big games he’s going to be criticised obviously… We’ve seen him get taken off in a few of the games and his body language wasn’t great.”

Despite being a midfielder, Fernandes is second in the Premier League Golden Boot this season. He is also the club’s top scorer and the favourite to land the PFA Player of the Year award. If he can take the glory that comes with these, he must be able to take the criticism levied on him in an equal vein.

Keane’s comments were made prior to Manchester United’s game against Manchester City. And Fernandes, for his part, did make a key contribution in the game, finding the back of the net from the penalty spot to give his team the lead as the Red Devils beat City 2-0 at the Etihad.
