Transfer News: Barcelona willing to sell Antoine Griezmann for £52m with Manchester United keen
According to Spanish news outlet OkDiario (h/t The Express), Manchester United are still interested in Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann.
The 29-year-old moved to the Nou Camp in 2019 in a deal worth £107million. He has since failed to replicate the same performances he made for Atletico Madrid and has often looked out of sync at the Nou Camp.
It would appear the Catalans are ready to cut their losses this summer. They are ready to take as much as £52m for the player. A significant hit given his standing in the game when he joined them.
Barcelona have been hit badly by the financial aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic. Selling Griezmann would help them in their efforts to balance the books.
It could help them in convincing Lionel Messi that a strong sporting project could yet be created. The Argentine legend’s contract expires in the summer and there exists the possibility that he could be finalyl be on his way.
Griezmann was a target for United in 2017. His contract at the Nou Camp runs until 2024 and he had earlier attracted attention from Paris Saint-Germain. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
No club for old men!
While signing Griezmann would look good on paper, it is fair to say that the player has lost his x-factor at Barcelona.
While it is still within his means to rediscover it, United will be taking a gamble by signing him. Soon to be 30, he is also not a long term option and the club is better off looking elsewhere.
The potential signing is reminiscent of our move for Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean now at Inter Milan was a disaster of a signing and was a financial liability. It’s time to show that we have since learned our lessons.
