Edinson Cavani closing in on Manchester United return

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has taken to Twitter, expressing his hope to return to action soon.

The 34-year-old’s admission comes on the heels of what was a disappointing 0-0 draw against Chelsea. It is the sixth time in seven games against the big-six that our attack has hit a blank.

Cavani has arguably been our best out-and-out striker this season. His presence on the field yesterday could have made a difference. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

The striker has been sidelined since the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion. An experienced player, his nous could have made the difference in what was a game of thin margins at the Bridge.

Cavani joined the club on summer deadline day and has since gone on to establish himself as a dependable player. This has proven to be useful; especially so given Anthony Martial’s loss of form.

The Uruguayan has so far made 24 appearances for United, scoring seven goals and assisting two. While the numbers may not appear prolific, a number of those goals have come in clutch situations. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Cavani’s contract at United expires at the end of the current season. The club however does retain the right to extend it by another year if they see fit.

It was revealed recently that choosing not to do so will net the 34-year-old a termination package of £1.7m. While he is not going to be a long-term option, having him around for another year will not just give us a dependable player to call upon, but also afford us more time to bring in a new striker.

United next take on Crystal Palace on 3rd March. The Eagles got the better of us in our first match of the season, winning 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Both teams have had differing fortunes since and we will hope to get back to winning ways at Selhurst Park. Whether Cavani will be fit to make the trip remains to be seen.
