Paul Pogba contract renewal at Manchester United not straightforward as suggested

The unresolved contract situation of Paul Pogba remains a burning issue at Manchester United and doesn’t look like it will end soon.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed last week that the club are in an ‘open dialogue’ with the Frenchman over extending his stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer of 2022.

The manager refused to throw light on any negotiations carried on behind the scenes while also remaining coy on whether the midfielder would be sold at the end of the season.

He did underline that Pogba remains as hungry and driven as the rest of his teammates to reach the pinnacle of success at United.

However, according to a report from IlBianconero in Italy (h/t Juve FC), Pogba’s future at United remains pretty much up in the air. While Solskjaer has indicated that he is optimistic about a renewal, the midfielder’s brother doesn’t quite feel the same way.

“Paul still has one year on his contract, I don’t know if he will remain until it expires. Otherwise, he can leave for free. The renewal? I don’t know. I don’t think we talked about it.”

Pogba has been repeatedly linked with a return to his former club Juventus, where he rose to stardom between 2012 and 2016. The Frenchman has failed to live up to the expectations since his return to United but he remains a key driving force behind the club’s surge for the PL title.

Hence, all three scenarios still remain a possibility as far as Pogba and the Red Devils are concerned. The World Cup winner can either sign a new deal and remain in the PL for the foreseeable future or United can opt to cash in on him if he doesn’t commit his future.

However, the last thing that United would want is for Pogba to walk away on a free transfer at the end of next season. That would represent a huge financial blow considering that the Red Devils broke the bank to re-sign him back in 2016.
