“Hope he proves us wrong” – Some fans divided as summer signing takes over iconic squad number

Manchester United fans react as Edinson Cavani is given the number seven jersey

Manchester United new boy Edinson Cavani is the club’s new number seven.

The 33-year-old has been entrusted with the iconic jersey that was previously occupied by Alexis Sanchez. The decision has split the fanbase, with fans taking to two predominant opinions.

While some feel the Uruguayan is unworthy of the number, others believe he will break the jinx it has held over the last few occupants.

Previously worn by the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, the number has seen the last few occupants struggle to make an impact.

Since Ronaldo’s departure, those who have donned the number include Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel di Maria, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez.

It is difficult to claim any of them has lived up to the level expected. It was also believed by some that the number was put aside for Jadon Sancho.

With the wonderkid still at Borussia Dortmund, disappointment among the fanbase is understandable. However, it does not mean we should discount what Cavani can bring to the table before he has even kicked a ball for us.

After all, he is a proven player and might be the one to end the poor run the number has had in recent years.

We take a look at how fans reacted to the news.
