Manchester United made Timo Werner an offer

According to Sky Germany (h/t Mirror), Manchester United made an offer for Timo Werner after Liverpool rejected the chance to sign him.

The 24-year-old is one of Europe’s hottest properties. A clinical striker, he has scored 31 goals and 13 assists in 41 appearances for RB Leipzig this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, Werner would have been an incredible addition to the United attack.

However, he chose to join Chelsea after they offered him a much more lucrative offer. Flush with the cash from selling Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata, the Blues had no issues in making the generous offer.

Werner eventually agreed on a contract worth around £200,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge. He will link up with his new club ahead of next season after the Blues triggered the RB Leipzig star’s £53million release clause. (h/t Mirror)

It is a significant investment, especially given today’s financial situation. United are not immune to the effect of the coronavirus pandemic and have to spend judiciously this summer.

Liverpool pulled out of the transfer citing the strain on the club’s finances. This rings true for most clubs around Europe.

The Merseysiders could choose to do so given the attacking options already at their disposal. For us, on the other hand, the German would have been a brilliant signing.

There is no doubt that Werner is an excellent player with a brilliant goalscoring record. There will be a genuine regret for missing out on him, especially if he goes on to succeed at Chelsea.

But for now, we have been thwarted in our efforts. It remains to be seen who we will sign ahead of the new campaign.
