Manchester United set to lose £17.05m in matchday revenue

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are set to be hit the hardest when it comes to playing games behind closed doors.

With no fans coming in, matchday revenue is not a source of income at this point of time. According to United’s latest financials, the club had a turnover of £627.10m during the 2018-19 season.

A significant 18% of the amount came from matchday revenue. This amounts to £110.82m being brought in via ticket sales and fans visiting Old Trafford.

With the activities currently in limbo, the club stands to lose around £17.05m of potential matchday income. It’s over £1m more than Tottenham, who face potential loss of £15.71m.

Arch-rivals Liverpool will be the third-worst hit, with losses of around £12.96m. (h/t Daily Star)

At a time when every penny matters, these losses are significant given the financial crisis engulfing the football world.

The summer transfer window could see fewer high-profile transfers, with a number of clubs forced to change their transfer plans.

United are no different. Ed Woodward had earlier claimed that the club is unlikely to spend big this summer.

Given the gap that exists between us and the top two teams in the league, United could have closed it down with a well thought out transfer window.

However, it appears we will have to work on securing smart deals over throwing money at players.

It remains to be seen what the club chooses to do in the upcoming window. With a number of talented youth joining and also coming through the ranks, self-reliance could very well be a solution.

Qualifying for the Champions League and its lucrative market is now more important than ever. Thankfully, United have every chance of doing so.
