The Ryan Giggs Dilemma: What Would Manchester United Do With Him If Mourinho Comes?

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs is a name that is probably synonymous with modern day Manchester United: he was a critical part of Sir Alex’s teams down the years and the Welshman ended his career with 35 titles, becoming the most decorated English player ever. However, Giggsy, as he is fondly called by the United faithful, turned into a player-manager in 2013-14, after David Moyes was sacked. Ever since Louis van Gaal arrived, the former Manchester City academy player has been entrusted with the role of assistant manager, since there is no one at the club who understands Manchester United as well as he does.

The situation now:

Manchester United have failed to make any giant leaps towards regaining their swagger in the Premier League, and with every passing day, it seems that it is certain that van Gaal won’t last till 2017, as his contract states. Although the former Ajax manager has repeatedly stated to see Giggs as his successor and even went in to the extent of saying that he had bought Anthony Martial, the immensely talented French forward for the “Flying Welshman”, yet it is highly unlikely that it will be so. The United Board doesn’t want to lose Giggs, but at the same time, they are well aware that he doesn’t have the credentials to take up the job which is arguably the most difficult one in the footballing world right now. If Jose Mourinho does come to Old Trafford in the summer of 2016, he will bring his own backroom staff, so it is extremely likely that the United legend will have to quit.

Fan view:

An idealistic United fan would obviously love to see Giggs manage the club on a permanent basis and not as an interim manager like he did in the 2013-14 season. However, the club needs results and results don’t come from sentiments, they come from hard work and facts. Not everyone can become a Pep Guardiola, in fact, more of them turn out to be like Gary Neville, another former Red Devil who is still struggling to adapt to his first managerial job at Valencia, despite being in charge for over 3 months now. If the Portuguese does come, it would be best for Giggs to take up a managerial position elsewhere, probably at a smaller club like Swansea City, and build his credentials. If he does well, he can be handed the keys to the manager’s office at Manchester United post-Mourinho
